In the world of IT, there is a hierarchy of blame. When a website doesn’t load, the user blames the computer. The computer technician blames the software. But eventually, all fingers point to the same person: The Network Admin.
Networking is the only profession where you are a “janitor” in a digital suit. If the network is running perfectly, nobody knows you exist. If the network goes down for five seconds, you are the villain in a disaster movie.
The Three Stages of Network Troubleshooting:
- Denial: “The ping is fine. It’s definitely a DNS issue. It’s always DNS.”
- Acceptance: “Okay, it’s not DNS. Someone probably plugged a router into itself and created a broadcast storm. I hate humans.”
- The Miracle: “I changed nothing, but it started working again. I will now back away slowly and never touch that rack again.”
